Safe Water Drinking Act
Safe Water Drinking Act changes January 4, 2014
The Safe Water Drinking Act, first passed in 1974, and significantly amended in the 1980’s and 90’s, sets the minimum requirements for drinking water quality and safety. It is implemented by the EPA and is enforced at the State level.
What does the law mandate?
The new “LEAD FREE” legislation reduces the permissible levels of lead in the wetted surfaces of pipes, fittings, faucets and fixtures to a weighted average of 0.25%. Products that meet this standard are referred to as “LEAD FREE.”
Are there any exceptions to the law?
The new law does not apply to pipes, fittings and fixtures that are used exclusively for non-potable services such as manufacturing, irrigation or any other use where water is not used for human consumption.
Does the Law specifically exclude anything?
YES, toilets, bidets, urinals, fill valves, flushometers, tub fillers, shower valves, water main gate valves 2” or larger.
Does the law effect me?
The law effects everyone. It makes it illegal to sell or install pipes, fittings and fixtures in all applications providing water for human consumption that do not comply with the new standard. That means whether you sell or install these products, you will need to supply products compliant with the new law after January 4, 2014
Who enforces the law?
The primary responsibility falls with the individual States. Massachusetts, through “Product Acceptance” requires 3rd party testing to the proper standards. Just because it is Product Accepted, doesn’t mean it’s ‘LEAD FREE”
How do I know the product is “LEAD FREE”?
The individual manufacturers will include a “LEAD FREE” marking or label on each of their products.
