2022-2023 Program

The plumbing tier courses are designed by test review clock hours and tiered based on previous tier knowledge. (248 CMR 11.06(2)(b) 1-7). Each Tier shall contain 110-clock hours, shall be consecutive, and shall be designed to coincide with the years of experience of the apprentice student. Students shall be required to demonstrate proficiency and competency in each tier by passing an examination designed by the school and/or the instructor. Students may not advance from one Tier to another until the clock hour and examination requirements of the preceding Tier have been successfully completed and documented. Regular class hour attendance is required. Each class time is posted in the calendar advertisement and kept through the class total hour period.

PT1 - Plumbing Tier 1

 

PT1 – 110 hour Tier 1 First Year Lesson for Journeyman Plumber Licensure

Requirements:
An unlicensed individual, who by definition may not accrue work experience, may complete Tier 1 of the education requirement prior to licensure. All remaining education and work experience must be accrued in compliance with the licensing and time frames described in 248 CMR 11.02(1)(b)2&3. A licensed apprentice may complete Tier 1 and Tier 2 in a single calendar year. Per lesson 2 guidelines – Each apprentice must attend and receive an OSHA 10 card through an OSHA certified instructor or program. Mandatory OSHA 10 hour Construction Safety Course Card must be on file to receive issued credit of hours. Application Details

HBTI will be starting the Tier 1 – 5 Classroom Plumbing Programs September 19, 20, & 21, 2022.

All students may signup using the form below. After you’ve completed and submitted the form, a representative will contact you to confirm your enrollment and complete payment. The tuition is to be paid in full by cash, check, money order or charge card unless a finance agreement is set up, signed and approved by the school office. Checks should be made to HBTI.

Tier 1 students do not need an apprentice registration to attend class and receive credit.

Tiers 2 – 5 – All students must have a current apprentice registration or journeyman license from the Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters, and state form copies of previous schooling hours for previous tiers.

Apprentice License prior to 9/1/08 – Experience – The applicant shall furnish documentary proof satisfactory to the Board of having completed practical work experience performing plumbing and gas fitting that totals no less than 8,000 clock hours as a licensed apprentice working as an employee under the direct supervision of a Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensed master plumber or under the direct supervision of a Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensed journeyman plumber who is in the employ of a master plumber. Experience installing HVAC components for the installation of heating systems, steam piping and hydronic heat piping or other work not requiring a plumbing or gas fitting license shall not be considered qualifying experience.

Apprentice License prior to 9/1/08 – Diploma – The applicant shall furnish documentary proof of having received a high school diploma or the equivalent.

248 CMR 11.02(1)(a)2b
Apprentice License prior to 9/1/08 – EducationThe applicant shall furnish documentary proof of having successfully completed 300 clock hours of plumbing and gas fitting theory culminating in a school or instructor designed examination to ensure competency. This education must take place over a period of no less than four years and must meet the requirements of 248 CMR 11.00. For each calendar year, no more than 165 hours of education may be credited for licensure purposes.

248 CMR 11.02(1)(a)4
Apprentice License prior to 9/1/08 – Expiration – The provisions of 248 CMR 11.02(1)(a) shall expire on May 1, 2021. All applicants for a journeyman plumbing license who submit an application on or after May 1, 2020 shall, without loss of any lawfully earned education or work experience, be subject to the same upgrading requirements as those imposed on apprentice licenses issued pursuant to 248 CMR 11.02(1)(b).

General Rule. An applicant will not receive credit for any work experience or education unless they were completed in conjunction with one another as measured by calendar years. For each year in which an apprentice obtains 165 clock hours of education (1 1/2 tiers), that apprentice must accrue 1,700 clock hours of qualifying work experience as a licensed apprentice. 248 CMR 11.02(1)(b)3.a. is subject to exceptions as described in 248 CMR 11.02(1)(b)3.b. and c. See Exception 3d above for an unlicensed individual.

248 CMR 11.02(1)(c)
Limitation on Examination Attempts. A licensed apprentice shall not be permitted to attempt the journeyman license examination more than six times without special Board approval demonstrating good cause.

Apprentices Please Note:

Effective June 23, 2012, meeting of the Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters with all board approved plumbing school directors, PSI EXAMS and the BOARD can only accept the proper state form signoff for school hours. School certificates for hours of class attended will no longer be accepted as proof of schooling. The proper forms are listed below and are available on the board website.
